A group of six young women are gearing up to travel to Haiti and help with the ongoing devastation that has wreaked havoc on the country that was hit by a massive earthquake in 2010.

Dubbed Hands for Haiti, the group plans to work for two weeks this summer at the New Life Orphanage, where the women will be helping with any building projects, supporting teachers and childcare workers, and providing relief to missionaries serving at the children’s home.

Although the group has no specific project in mind, they would ideally like to help build a school.

“They have nothing for the children for a school,” said member Christine Mann. “Right now they’re meeting in the open air. They don’t even have any kind of a tent with a roof over their heads and rainy seasons are coming up.

“If we could even build something temporary until we could come up with the money to build a more permanent structure.”

While in Haiti the group plans to catch up with an old friend, Kim O’Dwyer, a former Rolla resident who recently moved to Haiti to run her own children’s home called the Children of Grace Orphanage.
